Walkington Chess Club

Walkington’s very own chess club was started in 2001, when a small group of four players
first entered the Hull and District Chess Association R P Ross Four Board League and Cup competitions. Three of that original group – John Andrews, Mike Brookes and Adrian Brayshaw –were soon joined by Malcolm Hara and Chris Matthews, all of whom continue to play competitively.

Walkington are the smallest and newest club in the Association, which consists of four much larger Hull clubs in addition to teams from Beverley, Bridlington and Withernsea, with a total of over 100 regular players between them! Despite this we can claim to have had more than our fair share of success, having won promotion from the Second Division 4-Board Winter League, the First Division Winter League title, the 4-Board Summer competition and the 4-Board Cup
competition. In addition three of our team – Ralph Phillips, John Andrews and
Mike Brookes – have each won the Association’s annual Player of the Year Awards.

Having blown our trumpet we would like to emphasise that our small team has players at all levels and that grading and handicap systems have played a part in our success. We would very much like to attract new players, regardless of gender, age or ability. All levels are represented in competitive chess, and even if you would prefer to play non-competitively, you are welcome to join us.
A larger group would mean we could develop a regular club night.

Our home games are played upstairs in the Village Hall on weekday evenings on an ad hoc basis, when friendly games may also be possible if you would like to join in. The only charge is a share of the cost of hiring the room.

For further details please contact Mike Brookes on 01482 881337.
