Age UK Walkington 'Pop-in'
The Age UK group in Walkington was set up with support from the Hayride committee and from a slow start now has anything from 60-70 people attending the weekly 'Pop-in'.
Everyone is welcome to the Village Hall between 10 and 12 noon on a Thursday for a cup of tea or coffee, a gossip and a good laugh.
What Happens at the Pop-in?
Members claim to have the biggest scandal circle in the village and enjoy themselves with their
coach trips to Whitby and other places in the summer. In the winter months there is bingo and whist on alternate Mondays and the Christmas dinner has become an annual date in the village calendar.
Our bingo sessions by popular demand are held every Monday afternoon in the Village Hall at 2pm.
We are in urgent need of help!!
The Pop-In is open every Thursday in the Village Hall. Anything from 40-60+ members attend and for some of them this is one of the social highlights of their week. The men who help to run the Club are getting a bit long in the tooth and would appreciate help in setting up and putting away the tables and chairs.
We are looking for active people who for example may have just retired and would like to do something to help the village. It only takes about 15-20 minutes to set up and the same time to put them away. You never know, you might be interested in our activities and may wish to join the gang!
Also needed:
volunteers to serve drinks and wash up afterwards. If you could spare a couple of hours once every 6 weeks or so it would be greatly appreciated!
Phone Margaret Berry 867505, Mary Hill 872363 or Di Thomson 862496.
'Loneliness and lack of social opportunities are some of the causes of mental and physical
ill health in the elderly. The bus trips, the keep fit, the bingo and other activities are a vital part
of keeping our old folks healthy. You can be a part of this by giving us your time. Don’t be shy,
come and see us on a Thursday morning and have a chat. I promise you, you will not regret it.
You know helping others is the best way to help yourself.'

Why not pop-in, you will be most welcome
Getting Involved
It is not necessary to belong the "Pop-In" to join in other activities. For more details contact
Di Thomson (862496) or call in on Thursday morning to collect a copy of the programme.
For those who cannot walk to the club, there is a taxi service and members visit each other
when sick in hospital or at home or simply to sit with ill or lonely people for a few hours a week to keep them company.
